Breaking the Cycle of Procrastination

Procrastination is often mistaken for laziness, but it usually has a different root. Often, it grows out of perfectionism; the pressure to do something flawlessly can make starting feel overwhelming. When a task seems too big or the standards feel impossibly high, avoidance becomes a way to cope. That avoidance then creates stress, which reinforces the urge to delay even more, forming a frustrating cycle.

Breaking that cycle doesn’t require a burst of motivation or discipline—it starts small.

One of the most effective approaches is to break tasks into manageable pieces. Instead of focusing on completing everything perfectly, aim to begin with a single, simple step.

Progress, even imperfect, builds momentum and reduces the intimidation factor. Over time, these small actions can loosen perfectionism’s grip and make it easier to move forward.
